The story

Hi. I’m Mirabelle King. I’m 13 14 15 years old. I’ve been trying to get this thing done for years.

This thing is Cuddlefish.

Here’s the problem: Every year, 14 million tons of plastic enter the ocean. The plastic stays there, killing sea life and causing health problems for us. The ways to remove or reuse it are detrimental to the environment as well, accelerating climate change.

And ocean charities don’t get enough money to keep up.

The whole idea of Cuddlefish started back when I was 5. I was drawing pictures of fish, and my dad was explaining to me how drawings can be made into stuffed animals. I looked up from my fish drawing and exclaimed, “Daddy! It’s a Cuddlefish! Get it? Like the cephalopod, but a stuffed animal.”

We made a plan: I would draw the drawings, my mom would make the stuffed animals, and we could use Kickstarter to find people who wanted a Cuddlefish. And we could donate a portion of our proceeds to ocean charities.

The thing is my parents thought it was a phase, that I was just going to sit down one day and forget about it. They told me to do 100 more fish drawings. I did. They told me to pick my favorites. Did that, too. I got my mom to build prototypes. Waited and waited and waited until she got them done. I eventually realized that my parents weren’t going to do it for me.

So I decided to do it myself.

I got SCUBA certified. Our family dealt with COVID and cancer. And here I am, eight years later, starting my company. I got a great team together, even my parents, who are now pretty sure it wasn’t a phase.

Cuddlefish is ready to start swimming.
